Day 47 of 365- Bloody Mary cocktail

Day 3 of Juice Detox / Day 5 of no coffee- coffee's history:)

This is the first time in a while that I've actually written my blog entry the night of the meal. I think there's something to all of this raw juicing thing. I feel like I'm on speed or something. It's strange. I haven't felt this way in a very long time. I am starting to feel like my body is a machine that is operating on full power. I overcame a wild challenge tonight. Nan's cooking. We went over there for dinner ( Richie still out of town ) and she made my all time favorite meal- roast with mashed potatoes and broccoli on the side. Wow. This was a hard thing for a couple of reasons:

1) I'm not sure I really even care too much about this fast I'm doing. I'm still in the beginning stages of it. I LOVE how I feel, but I can't help but be a bit skeptical as so many things similar have failed me in the past. Though this seems to make the most sense.

2) I didn't want to offend Nan. She is a woman, and like me, she probably would like to be acknowledged for a hard day's work in the kitchen for her guests. Not to mention she is Italian. I think Italian women are known for pushing food. All in great care of course.

3) I was contemplating just eating it anyways. It is my body, right? I am the one inflicting this torture on to myself. And, Nan won't be around forever, and I'll wish I had eaten just one last meal... Something inside of me just says, "keep doing it!", "keep up with the fast". But to what gain? Oh yes, I forgot, the way I feel. It's plain and simple. The way I feel. This fast is proving to me to have come to me out of nowhere, and it's prompted me to research the hell out of the subject of "raw", and I'm hooked. I have had the most productive day, my body feels optimum, my senses feel extreme and present, my aches went away, I feel solid, I keep getting random chills of comfort up and down my spine like when a cat purrs, and it's only day 3? What is next? Transcendence? Something else really really weird to me, I've actually contemplated giving up meat too and going for this whole "raw" thing.

4) I decided to just not say anything. I took the food to another room and spoke loudly of how great it was while feeding it to Penn and pawning some off onto Timothy. This was sort of funny, but I still felt a bit guilty for the dishonesty. It would have been true had I been eating it. Nan is one of my favorite cooks.

So I proceeded to go to the store and stock up on organic veggies once again, and when I got home I invented this concoction:

BLOODY MARY COCKTAIL

2 carrots
3 tomatoes- fresh off vine
handful of baby roma tomatoes
about 5 celery stalks
1/2 lemon ( peeled )
1/2 of a leek
1 head of romaine lettuce
about 6 cloves garlic
1" of ginger root

REMARKS: This one is very very spicy. I love it though. I felt like it needed more of a tomato to other ingredients ratio though. It was a little celery heavy. The garlic is supposedly good for the immune system, so I enjoyed the burn of that. I thought I might get a stomach ache, but I didn't. I just felt really charged up.

Day 46 of 365- Homemade Almond Milk

( July 28th )

Day 4 of no coffee. Day 2 of the juice detox. Wow, today was the worst of the challenge with juicing only. I threw my back out yesterday, and had been in pain. I got a dehydration headache, felt really out of it, took ibuprofen, and craved very unhealthy things including the homemade peanut butter cookies I had made a couple of nights ago. But, I didn't fail, and more to come on some amazing successes with regards to this. GJ came over, and I had bought raw almonds to try the whole make your own almond milk thing. It was quite an adventure. Loved it though. It was like a extremely rich dessert considering my juicing detox. I'm still researching and such to see how many days I want to do it, what to use as far as fruits and vegetables, etc. I discovered this really cool and funny raw foodist Dan the Man with the Master Plan dude. He cracks me up. But he's very real and legit.

Day 45 of 365- The Juicer

( July 27th )

Day 3 of no coffee. I think I might have done it! At least I feel good. I watched a movie last night called "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" and it really inspired me to continue on my health path. I bought a juicer this morning. Okay, wow. Here we go... I may have found my purpose. At least when it comes to health. Ha ha..

I'VE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD THAT I AM AN EXTREMIST. IS THAT A GOOD THING?

Day 44 of 365- Couscous Salad w/ Blueberries & Mango

( July 26th )

Wow, can you believe I actually have a recipe to share in my I love to cook challenge. I picked up a magazine when I got out of Bikram yesterday, and it happened to have this amazingly fresh looking recipe. Loving it.

( recipe to come..)

COUSCOUS SALAD W/ BLUEBERRIES & MANGO

Adding to it I had a lot of spinach which was going to go bad, so I asked Nan ( She had came over to help me with the kids since Richie was still out of town ) what to make, and she came up with this from what I had in my fridge.

SAUTÉ SPINACH W/ GARLIC & SAUSAGE

Sausage is from "Henry's"- Organic, No Hormones, etc.
Apple Smoked Sausage
Bunch of Organic Spinach
Fresh Garlic
Garlic Salt
Kosher Salt
Olive Oil

FOLLOWED BY A FUN EVENING AT THE PARK WATCHING TIMOTHY PLAY BASKETBALL

Day 43 of 365- Free Day

( July 25th ) Monday

I chopped more of my hair off, I gave it a more slanted pointy look to work with my pointy features. I LOVE it. Day 2 of Richie being gone. Hard, hard, hard. I got Indian food with my sister-in-law Marie & Timothy, bought a new hat, and fed everyone leftovers again. Ha ha. So many free days. They are piling up. Am I failing at my challenge? I DID quit coffee today too. Wow. This is hard. I am SOOOOO addicted to coffee. I've been in a haze all day. I heard caffeine is good for creating more wrinkles and causing dehydration which in turn causes cellulite and everything else ugly, so I've decided to quit. Let's see how I do.

NEW CHOP

Day 42 of 365- Free Day

( July 24th )

Richie left this morning to Napa for work, and we were left with the aftermath chaos of the party. I love my boys though. We all tend to get more rambunctious with Papa gone. They've all turned in to tie-dyed hippies living up here in Topanga. Ha ha, just kidding... Their Aunt Lisa is very in to dying lately, and she brought us all freshly dyed tees. Great colors for pictures:) Needless to say, we pretty much just snacked on the leftover sandwich from the party.

Day 41 of 365- Free Day

( July 23rd ) Nanny's Birthday 83!!

Ryder and Penn got very worn out from our 1 day camping excursion to San Onofre Bluffs in San Diego County; however, we still had to hold the big birthday party. Ryder & Nan shared the party at our pool. Nan turned 83 while little Ryder turned 3. 80 years difference. Pictures from that to come...

Day 40 of 365- Free Day

( July 22nd )

I was more concerned with the scenery, my body, and swimming than any food on this camp-out, though I did buy a French Baguette with Brie and Avocado to enjoy when we got back to camp after being on the beach all day. What a fun trip!

WHAT I WORE:

MY THRIFT FIND SWEATER

Day 39 of 365- Free Day

( July 21st )

This was one of those days where Richie worked all day, and I had the children. I'm not sure what I made, but it wasn't really special or I probably would have done a picture. I know we were getting up early the next day to go camping, so I was probably working on packing everything:)

Day 38 of 365- Salmon w/ Richie's Amazing Sauce!

( July 19th ) Ryder's Birthday!!

Richie made this amazing sauce. I'll have to ask him again. I'm so lazy with this blog lately. At least I remember to get the pictures...

( recipes later..)

SALMON W/ RICHIE'S AMAZING SAUCE

Day 37 of 365- Potato Leek Raviolini

( July 18th )

This was the last full day my sister Bek was going to be in town. I wanted to share one of our favs with her: Potato/ Leek Raviolini, or in this case, Cheese Ravioli.

( recipes later..)

SIDE SALAD W/ HOMEMADE ITALIAN DRESSING

Then, at the end of the day, even with our vows to not drink, we each had a glass of white wine on our gorgeous hike in Topanga Canyon. Someone once said that rules are meant for those who follow them. This hike is the one behind the house we really wanted to buy. Very remote as far as people go, but not hard to get to. It's our little secret:) LOVING my hair short btw..

Day 36 of 365- Collaborative Dinner with My Vegetarian Sisters.. Yum!

( July 17th )

I decided to make a separate entry for this one because it was so great even though the avocado sandwich below was the same day. What a great day for food! Sorry if some of the pics are kind of blurry, but I was just so excited. Haha, just kidding. Low light.

( recipes to come later..)

THERE'S NOTHING MORE REWARDING THAN BONDING WITH GOOD FRIENDS AND FAMILY OVER A DINNER TABLE:)

Day 35 of 365-Avocado Sandwich

( July 17th )

... probably the best avocado sandwich I've ever made. Maybe it was the homemade italian dressing, maybe it was the sourdough bread, which I never use for this, maybe it was the rich tasting arugula... I'm not sure, but I hope to recreate this.

AVOCADO SANDWICH

I'll post recipe later..

Day 34 of 365-Free Day

( July 16th )

NAN & PUP'S FOR DINNER: Why not?

BROWN RICE W/ BROCCOLI & CHICKEN

WE ALL CUT OUR HAIR

Day 32 of 365- Free Day

( July 14th )
Let's just say, there was a lot I had to deal with with regards to my children today. Haha. The last thing on my mind was what to cook for dinner.

Day 31 of 365- Bow-tie Pasta w/ Vodka Sauce

( July 13th )

BOW-TIE PASTA W/ VODKA SAUCE

"Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead"

I watched this movie with Timothy the other night ( Tuesday the 26th ), and it really put a fire under my ass to become more aware of what I put into my body. I can't believe where I've come. Three days later, and I've totally revamped my thinking. I'm doing a juicing fast. I'll post more later on that. But, to start, here is the movie trailer. I highly recommend this documentary.

Day 30 of 365- Fingerling Potatoes with Fresh Rosemary

( July 12th )

Zeana came over, we swam, put the children down for a nap, then proceeded to get a head start on dinner. I started the fingerling potatoes, learned that my broiler in this new oven is way more powerful than the one in the Detroit St. house, and burned them a bit. Richie started the charcoal, made burgers, bbq chicken, and Brussels sprouts. I made a multi grain pasta mix, and found out from Zeana asking me that my chicken bouillon that I've been using for some time now has MSG in the ingredients. Ahhh. I feel so annoyed. Why is this so hard? I felt so stressed out that I forgot to even take pictures of the meal. Although it was really good.

FINGERLING POTATOES W/ FRESH ROSEMARY

a small bag of finger link potatoes
1/2 onion ( yellow )
1 TBs canola oil
1 TBs butter
fresh rosemary
kosher salt
pepper

Zeana told me that Canola oil is supposedly bad and that olive oil is a better choice. I told her that olive oil is poisonous at high temperatures. She also pointed out that I hadn't bought "organic" fingerling potatoes, and that if I am going to skimp on organic ingredients, don't do it on things like potatoes because of the skins being able to soak up the toxins so easily in something like a potato. I told her to have some water and that it was really really good out of our fridge filter. I told her the filter worked really well. She asked me how did I know, did I have the water tested? I really don't like it when what I am doing is evaluated. I'm not sure why, but my afternoon with Zeana reminded me of the poem by Suzanne Somers "Organic Girl". It seemed like everything I did was not "cool" enough or "organic" enough or "healthy" enough.

"Organic girl dropped by last night

For nothing in particular

Except to tell me again how beautiful and serene she feels

On uncooked vegetables and wheat germ fortified by bean sprouts–

Mixed with yeast and egg whites on really big days–

She not only meditates regularly, but looks at me like I should

And lectures me about meat and ice cream

And other aggressive foods I shouldn’t eat."

-Suzanne Somers

Day 29 of 365- Pasta with Zucchini and Sausage

( July 11th )

My 365 Day Challenge is turning in to Richie's 365 day look what I made tonight challenge. Ha ha.. Once again. He made a great tomato/ buffalo mozzarella salad with toast and a pasta with zucchini and sausage. I don't feel guilty though because I wasn't feeling well. I had done Bikram earlier and brought on a very bad headache. I wasn't up to cooking since my head hurt and I was seeing spots all over. I'll ask Richie later how he made these.

Day 28 of 365- Free Day

( July 10th )

Today, we cleaned all day long. Wow, our house is really coming together. We are just loving it. But, we were too exhausted to try to cook, so tried out the Maui Grill which we had been wanting to try out at the bottom of the hill. It was okay. :) I like that it's called "Maui Grill" and Topanga feels like Maui to me. This owl below was given to me by my friend Janell. I put it up on the window sill in my kitchen to remind me of Richie's grandma. ( Nan ). She is italian, and the most wonderful person. She collects owls and I thought it representative of how she is in her kitchen to help inspire me daily. She is the most warming welcoming person I've met, always has homemade food to offer, and takes care of her family with such dignity and consistency. I can only dream to be as great as her. Sometimes I look at this owl and feel like she is watching me. Ha ha.. What Would Nan Do? WWND

Day 27 of 365- Brie, Mango, & Poblano Pepper Quesadillas

( July 9th )

Today we did about a 14 mile bike ride with my sisters on the coast from Santa Monica to past Marina Del Ray. It was a gorgeous day! We came home and made the most amazing quesadillas. Once again, Richie... I am failing, but pretending that I am not. I'm making blog entries anyways. I will rehabilitate an interest, I just know it...

BRIE, MANGO, & POBLANO PEPPER QUESADILLAS

Brie Cheese
Poblano Peppers- pre-boiled
Fresh Mango
Flour Tortillas
Butter

Pile together & enjoy :)

BTW:
I'm LOVING this particular Coconut Water. It was on sale at Ralph's. YAY! I always feel great after drinking this.

Day 26 of 365- Free Day

( July 8th )

If this list tells you anything about how chaotic life in a new home can be during the adjustment period...

Nan & Pup & GJ came over to help out with the kids while I went to see West Side Story at the Hollywood Bowl with my sister. We all ate pizza we had picked up from Trader Joe's. It's a cornmeal crust one. ( Very nice )

Day 25 of 365- Free Day

( July 7th )

Kids had been sick, we bought a TV to help us entertain the kids while cooking. We covered our wall in photos and art so that the TV didn't seem so obtrusive. We only use it every now and again. We are sort of against television and hadn't had one in years.

Day 24 of 365- Pesto Pasta

( July 6th )

Richie's creation once again. He LOVES to cook, so if I'm not on top of it, he will just do the dinner...

PESTO PASTA

Fresh Garlic
Almonds
Fresh Basil
Olive Oil
Italian Seasoning
Salt
Pepper
Parmesan
Spaghetti Pasta

Ask Richie...

REMARKS: Perfection

Day 23 of 365- Free Day

( July 5th )

I pigged out all day, but can't really remember what I ate. Oh, yes, Richie Made Salmon, Kale, & Brown Rice, which I ate too, and I made myself a quesadilla with leftover grilled veggies from Bek's pasta salad.

Timothy, Bekah, and I met Jamie, James, and Nick down in Santa Monica for dinner at a vegan restaurant Jamie's been wanting to try.

It was great. I ate a coconut cream pie slice since I had already had dinner at home. There was no dairy in it. Timothy had a club sandwich ( vegetarian of course ). He loved it.

Still loving my views here in Topanga...
